Maya Payne Smart

Maya Payne Smart, owner of Ralston Payne Enterprises LLC, is a professional writer who has written more than 200 articles for newspapers, business publications and consumer magazines nationwide. She is the associate editor of Greenville Design, a quarterly home and garden magazine, and regularly contributes to a range of business publications including Black Enterprise, Crain’s Cleveland Business and GSA Business Journal.

Maya is also the author of several how-to guides on topics ranging from business writing to cutting everyday expenses for Quamut.com, a Barnes & Noble Publishing venture.

She enjoys helping students make informed college and career choices as a contributing author for Princeton Review books including “America's Best Value Colleges, 2008 Edition” and “120 Jobs That Won't Chain You to Your Desk.” She also helped edit the forthcoming Princeton Review trade paperback “What to Do with Your Psychology or Sociology Degree.”

Maya also teaches undergraduate journalism courses as an adjunct faculty member at Clemson University. She received a bachelor's degree with honors in Social Studies from Harvard University in 2002 and a master's degree in editorial journalism from the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University in 2005. She is a member of the Harvard Club of South Carolina, the Society of American Business Editors and Writers, the National Association of Black Journalists and the Greenville (SC) Chapter of The Links, Incorporated.

Maya and her husband, Shaka, live in Clemson, South Carolina.
